Background of the Study

Electoral violence poses a significant threat to democratic consolidation and inclusive political participation in Nigeria. Women, in particular, are disproportionately affected by electoral violence, which discourages their active involvement in politics (Abdullahi & Ibrahim, 2023). In Damaturu Local Government, Yobe State, cultural, religious, and security challenges exacerbate the marginalization of women in the political process. Studies indicate that electoral violence creates an environment of fear, limiting women’s participation as voters, candidates, and political leaders (Aliyu & Musa, 2024). This study appraises the relationship between electoral violence and women’s political participation in Damaturu, highlighting strategies to promote gender-inclusive politics.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to promote women’s political participation in Nigeria, electoral violence remains a significant barrier in Damaturu Local Government. Intimidation, harassment, and physical attacks deter women from participating in elections, perpetuating gender inequality in politics (Ahmed & Usman, 2024). While existing literature addresses electoral violence broadly, there is limited focus on its specific impact on women in Damaturu. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how electoral violence affects women’s political engagement.
